When selecting corals, focus on a few choice species that can thrive in compatible environments. Place corals in optimal locations that match their light and flow requirements. Choose colorful and resilient varieties that can grow well in your specific conditions.
Essential equipment includes a high-quality skimmer, effective water circulation pumps, appropriate lighting (metal halides, LEDs, or T5), a calcium reactor, media reactors for carbon and phosphate removal, and a reliable auto top-off system.
Maintain water quality by regularly testing key parameters such as pH, salinity, calcium, alkalinity, and nitrate. Perform regular water changes (recommended is weekly) and ensure your RO/DI unit is functioning correctly to provide high-quality water.
To set up a protein skimmer, position it in the sump with a constant water level for optimal performance. Regularly adjust the skimmer for efficient waste removal, clean it monthly for peak performance, and replace worn or soiled parts as needed.
A UV sterilizer helps control harmful pathogens, algae, and parasites by exposing water to UV light, which kills or deactivates these impurities as they pass through. It's an effective measure for enhancing overall tank health.
Media reactors should be cleaned and refilled with fresh media every 3-4 weeks, depending on tank load and water quality. Monitor water parameters to determine the frequency of necessary maintenance.
The ideal water parameters include specific gravity of 1.025 - 1.026, pH of 8.2 - 8.4, calcium levels between 400 - 450 ppm, alkalinity of 8.5 - 9 dKH, magnesium at 1300 - 1400 ppm, nitrates between 5 - 10 ppm, phosphates at .03 - .06 ppm, and temperature maintained between 75 - 79°F.
To raise pH, you can add buffer additives that increase alkalinity. To lower pH, ensure proper aeration and consider using a CO2 reactor. However, always make adjustments slowly, monitoring levels carefully to avoid stressing your livestock.
Feed your fish a balanced diet by offering pre-washed frozen foods like Mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp, feeding them twice a day. Ensure that foods are age-appropriate and allow your fish to consume the food quickly to minimize waste.
Feed corals by broadcast feeding a variety of foods such as Oyster Feast and Artemia. This ensures they receive necessary nutrients and enhances growth and coloration. Feed corals a couple of times a week, timing it when the blue light is on for optimal feeding.
