For corals, I feed non-photosynthetic (NPS) corals daily with a variety of foods, approximately 20 different types. Goniopora corals are fed twice a week. Fish are fed the same variety of foods; however, extra care is taken to ensure the NPS corals get their share of food.
A Turkey blast involves using a turkey baster to gently blow detritus and waste off the rock and coral surfaces. This is done weekly to help maintain water quality and keep the coral surfaces clean.
First, unplug the Auto-top-Off and return pump. Use one bucket for RODI water and another for siphoned water. Mix salt into the RODI water to reach 34-35 ppt, then siphon about 40% of the tank into the empty bucket, ensuring sediment is removed. Refill the tank with the new saltwater mix using a plastic cup to avoid splashing corals and then turn the equipment back on.
Filter floss should be cleaned twice a week, while activated carbon and GFO are rinsed every three weeks to maintain flow and filtration efficiency. New filter floss and carbon/GFO should be added during maintenance.
I use the Ecotech Marine Radion XR15 G5 PRO. It's efficient and provides a full spectrum of light crucial for coral growth and pigmentation.
During summer, I use an Inkbird Temperature Controller ITC-308S along with a Boyu cooling fan to help control the temperature. This is essential in preventing heat stress on corals.
I use an Ecotech Marine Versa VX-1 for dosing Red Sea KH/Alkalinity. The dosage is adjusted based on weekly testing, ensuring stable parameters.
I have a custom DIY filtration system using egg crate and filter media consisting of filter floss and a combination of carbon/GFO or Chemi-Pure Elite.
Ideal water parameters include: - pH: 7.6 to 8.0 - Alkalinity: 155 ppm - Phosphate: 0.05 to 0.3 ppm - Nitrate: approximately 10 ppm - Calcium: around 420 ppm - Magnesium: approximately 1260 ppm.
Alkalinity and phosphate levels are tested weekly. Other parameters like nitrate, pH, calcium, magnesium, and potassium should be tested as needed, especially if dosing or water changes are performed.
I utilize a vast variety of foods, including: - Live foods like phytoplankton, rotifers, and brine shrimp. - Powdered foods such as Reef-Roids and coral food. - Frozen options like herbivore frenzy and mysis shrimp. - Specialized liquids like AcroPower and MinS.
I believe in diverse feeding, changing the food type daily to offer a variety of nutrient profiles. This helps ensure that everything is properly nourished and can thrive.
