For a 20-gallon reef aquarium, it's recommended to perform water changes of 10% to 15% once or twice a week. This helps maintain water quality and nutrient levels.
GFO (Granular Ferric Oxide) is used to remove phosphates while carbon is used to eliminate toxins and impurities from the water. You should change them typically every three weeks or based on your nutrient levels.
You should test for alkalinity (Alk), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) weekly. Occasionally, you should also check phosphate (PO4) and nitrate (NO3) levels.
Fish can be fed a variety of foods daily, such as pellets, Mysis shrimp, or a mix like Larry's Reef Frenzy Nano, to ensure a balanced diet.
Corals should be fed a couple of times per week with specific coral foods such as OysterFeast, RotiFeast, KZ Coral Vit, or NutriCell to promote growth and health.
An efficient filtration setup might include a desktop reactor for media, alternating between GFO and carbon, along with a quality return pump and powerheads for circulation.
Although a skimmer is not used in this setup, regular cleaning of any equipment is essential. Consider vinegar soaks to remove coraline algae buildup from equipment when it occurs.
