Feed your fish daily using high-quality flakes like Cobalt Aquatics Mysis Flakes. For corals like zoas and gonis, use about ¼ tsp of Reef Roids daily. For suns and anemones, feed 1 cube of Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp daily. Regular, diverse feeding promotes a healthy environment.
It's ideal to perform a 2-gallon water change once a week, though practically, a change once per month is acceptable. Regular water changes help maintain stable water parameters and remove excess nutrients.
For a healthy nano reef, keep an eye on salinity (1.025 +/- 0.003) and temperature (76-81°F). Other parameters like pH, calcium, alkalinity, potassium, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate are also essential; however, the owner suggests a less frequent testing approach after establishing stability.
Feed heavily and often to keep a nutrient-rich environment that supports growth. High nutrient levels encourage the presence of zooplankton like copepods and phyto, which are integral for coral health.
Begin with hardy, aquacultured corals such as zoanthids, soft corals, and easier LPS corals. Examples to consider include Goniopora, Elegance Coral, and various zoanthids, which are generally more forgiving for new reef keepers.
Research each coral's specific needs for light, flow, and nutrients. Provide adequate lighting (like T5s) and avoid over-filtering, which can remove beneficial organisms. Regular feeding and maintaining a clean environment with a good cleanup crew support coral health.
Use high-quality lighting suited for coral growth, such as T5s like ATI Coral Plus + ATI Blue Plus. Proper lighting is crucial for sustaining photosynthetic corals and enhancing their colors.
A combination of biological and mechanical filtration works well. This setup can include a power filter filled with chaeto for biological filtration and a multi-stage canister filter for mechanical filtration with filter floss, bio balls, and carbon.
