To maintain optimal water parameters in your reef tank, regularly test your water for temperature, pH, specific gravity, nitrate (NO3), calcium (Ca), alkalinity (Alk), magnesium (Mg), and phosphate (PO4). Based on the tank setup, ensure the following ranges: Temperature between 25-27°C (77-80°F), pH between 8.1-8.5, specific gravity at 35 ppt (1.025), NO3 at 0 ppm, Ca at 400-420 ppm, Alk at 7-8 dKH, and Mg at 1250 ppm.
For reef tanks, T5 lighting is a great option due to its efficiency and spectrum. Roberto utilizes a Pacific Sun 8x39W T5 fixture, which consists of 3x Blue Plus, 2x Coral Plus, and 3x Sylvania 15K bulbs. The lighting photoperiod is set from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
For effective filtration in a reef tank, utilize a protein skimmer to maintain low nutrient levels (ULNS). Additionally, incorporate live rock and some media in the sump tank for biological filtration. Regular water changes also help in nutrient export, as noted by Roberto's routine of 5-10% water changes weekly.
Roberto uses a 3x Kamoer X1 dosing pump for Aquaforest Balling ABC+ (calcium, alkalinity, magnesium) and a Kamoer X1 PRO to dose carbocalcium. Regular testing, especially weekly alkalinity checks, helps maintain stable parameters.
A nutrient export strategy is crucial to prevent algae growth and maintain water quality. Roberto employs a skimmer and regular water changes, reducing his water change frequency from monthly to 5-10% weekly as the tank matured, ensuring nutrients like NO3 and PO4 remain low.
Roberto follows a detailed maintenance schedule: daily tasks include feeding fish, inspecting equipment, cleaning the glass, and checking on corals and fish. Weekly tasks involve performing a 5-10% water change, checking top off levels, and testing alkalinity. Pumps are cleaned as needed.
To address algae problems, it's important to identify the source of excess nutrients. Regularly clean the tank, ensure proper flow, reduce feeding, and consider using products like Vibrant to manage problematic algae like bubble algae.
To ensure corals thrive, focus on maintaining stable water parameters, providing adequate lighting, and managing flow within the tank. Additionally, consider selective feeding with phyto mix, rotifers, and amino acids to supplement their diet.
Your choice should depend on your tank's focus. Roberto's primary focus is on SPS corals, with fish selected mainly to support coral health. Consider species known for symbiotic relationships, such as clownfish with anemones, but be cautious of overcrowding which can lead to competition for space.
