In this 12-gallon nano reef aquarium, a 36" LED fixture with a ratio of 50% blue and 50% white LEDs is used. This balance simulates natural sunlight, promoting coral growth and maintaining color vibrancy. For optimal results, ensure that your lights are suitable for the specific corals you plan to keep.
For filtration, a 4" filter sock with Polyfill is utilized alongside a BRS Dual Reactor. The first chamber contains biopellets at a ¼ recommended dosage, while the second holds ROX Carbon. This setup effectively removes waste and maintains water clarity. It's crucial to regularly check and replace filter media according to your tank's needs.
A Finnex 50w heater is used in this setup, suitable for maintaining the temperature of a small tank like the 12-gallon. Ensure your heater is compatible with the aquarium size and can maintain a stable temperature of around 76-79°F, critical for the health of both fish and corals.
Two ½" return pipes powered by an Eheim 1260 pump ensure adequate water circulation. This setup prevents dead spots and promotes even distribution of nutrients and oxygen throughout the tank. Adjust the flow rate depending on the needs of your corals and fish, as some prefer calmer waters.
Weekly 5-gallon water changes are performed, which helps prevent the accumulation of toxins and replenishes essential elements. During each water change, it's advised to vacuum the sandbed to remove detritus and maintain overall tank health.
Corals are fed every 2-3 days with foods like reef chili and Acropower, which are designed to provide the necessary nutrients for optimal health. It's important to adjust feeding based on the type and needs of your corals, as different species may require different nutrient profiles.
Regular maintenance, such as weekly water changes and proper feeding practices, can help prevent algae blooms. Reducing excess nutrients by controlling feeding levels, maintaining a stable water quality, and ensuring adequate water circulation are key strategies. An appropriate filtration and skimming regime also plays a vital role.
If your corals are pale, this may indicate low nutrient levels. Adjust your feeding regime to provide more food for both fish and corals, and ensure that your water parameters are within the recommended ranges. It may take time for color to return, as over-husbandry can negatively affect coral health.
Check if the biopellets are clumping together or showing signs of decay. If they appear compacted or don't stir well when mildly agitated, it's time to replace or slightly increase the dosage. Remember, maintaining the correct amount of biopellets is crucial for keeping nitrate levels in check.
It's normal for new tanks to experience fluctuations in water parameters. Monitor your water chemistry regularly, and make small adjustments to your maintenance routine to stabilize conditions. Patience is key; avoid making drastic changes all at once, as this can further destabilize the system.
