It's generally recommended to perform water changes every 1 to 2 weeks, but some hobbyists, like Veng, prefer larger water changes less frequently. Veng mentions doing a 50% to 75% water change every 3 to 4 months. When doing so, it's crucial to match salinity, temperature, and calcium/alkalinity levels beforehand to avoid stressing your tank.
A good feeding schedule is to feed your fish 2-4 times a day, using an auto feeder for consistency. Include a variety of foods such as sinking pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, coral blends, and liquid supplements. Veng feeds about a cube of frozen food daily and uses an auto feeder filled with sinking pellets.
You should test your water parameters when you notice something is off, ideally before a scheduled water change. Adjust your dosing accordingly once you know the results. It's important to identify issues before they escalate.
Start by planning the layout before adding anything. Create structures that provide hiding spots for fish and corals, and allow for flow around all areas. Veng chose to create an archway in his escape, which allowed more room for corals to grow. Consider aesthetics and functionality when placing rocks and corals.
You can include a variety of corals based on your preferences and the tank's capabilities. Veng has a mix of soft, LPS, and SPS corals. Soft corals like zoanthids and mushrooms are often easier for beginners, while LPS such as Duncans and chalice corals can add color and variety. SPS corals require more stable conditions and usually require more light and flow.
Essential equipment typically includes a quality skimmer, dependable lighting, a heater, a return pump, and filtration system (like filter socks). Additional tools, like a dosing pump, media reactor, and a controller, can enhance water quality and simplify maintenance.
When selecting lighting for a reef tank, consider the types of corals you'll be keeping. T5 fluorescent fixtures are popular as they provide a soft light which can be beneficial for coral growth. Veng prefers T5 lighting for its color spectrum and soft light, avoiding LED shimmer.
If you overshoot the recommended dose of GFO, it can harm your tank by causing slow tissue necrosis in corals. Reduce the GFO amount to the recommended dosage immediately and test your water parameters frequently. Monitor the corals and make necessary adjustments in maintenance to help them recover.
Using Mr. Clean Magic Erasers is an effective way to clean the inside and outside of your tank glass. They contain no harmful chemicals, making them safe for your aquarium. Ensure you rinse the eraser well after use to avoid leaving any residue.
