For a nano reef aquarium, it is recommended to use high-intensity lighting systems. For example, Junkitu uses a 20-inch Sunpod 150w Metal Halide (MH) fixture with a 20K Giesemann Megachrome Blue lamp, which provides excellent light spectrum for coral growth and color enhancement.
Temperature control is crucial for reef tanks. Junkitu faced challenges with temperature fluctuations due to climate control in his office. He successfully integrated a Current USA Prime chiller to maintain a stable temperature between 77°F to 79°F, ensuring the health of his corals and fish.
A simple but effective filtration system can be set up using live rock and live sand, combined with a protein skimmer. In Junkitu's case, he uses a Sapphire Aquatics protein skimmer along with live rock and sand to maintain water quality.
Feeding should be a balanced mix of food types. Junkitu feeds his tank with a variety of options such as Spectrum and Formula 1 marine pellets, Kent Marine Zoe, Cyclopeeze, and DT's Phytoplankton, alternating days to ensure a balanced diet for his fish and corals.
In terms of supplementation, Junkitu uses Kent Marine Nano 2-part additive on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and B-Ionic 2-part additive on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This helps maintain essential calcium and alkalinity levels in the water.
When introducing new livestock, it is crucial to acclimate them properly to minimize stress. Junkitu emphasizes long acclimation times to ensure the new inhabitants adjust to the tank's water conditions without shocks.
Beginner-friendly corals include softies and lower-light species. Junkitu started with green mushrooms and gradually added various corals like Zoanthids, Ricordea, and Montipora species, which are well-suited for nano reefs.
Regular maintenance is key. Junkitu scrubs and scrapes algae once a week, which helps control algae outbreaks and keeps the tank looking clean. Additionally, maintaining low nutrient levels (0 Nitrates and 0 Ammonia) helps prevent excessive algae growth.
A weekly water change of 20% is recommended to keep the water parameters stable. Junkitu uses C-Pure seawater for his weekly changes which helps in replenishing trace elements essential for the health of corals and fish.
Daily top-off with RO/DI water is essential to replace evaporation loss. This practice helps maintain salinity levels in your reef tank. Junkitu performs this as a part of his daily routine.
