Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ideal water parameters for a reef aquarium?

For a healthy reef aquarium, aim for the following water parameters: Calcium: 450ppm, Alkalinity: 10-11dKH, Specific Gravity: 1.026, Temperature: 79-80°F, pH: 8.12 - 8.32.

What type of filtration system do you use for your reef tank?

I utilize a sump system with an acrylic tank of approximately 40 gallons. The protein skimmer is a venturi type rated for a 150-gallon system, effectively removing waste. I also have about 70 lbs of live rock for bio-filtration and a three-inch deep live sediment bed.

How do you maintain proper water circulation in your reef tank?

I use a Quiet-One return pump with a water-oscillating device for flow, along with four Maxi-Jet 1200 powerheads, which are connected to a Wavemaster Pro wavemaker for additional circulation.

What type of lighting do you use for your aquarium?

My main tank is lit by two 400 watt 20K Radium bulbs, supplemented by two 96 watt true actinic bulbs. I also have fans for ventilation. The propagation/refugium tank uses two 250 watt metal halide 20K bulbs.

What is the photoperiod for the main and propagation/refugium tanks?

For the main tank: Actinics turn on at 11:30 AM, followed by Halide #1 and Halide #2, with all lights off by 11:00 PM. For the propagation/refugium tank, the lights are on from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

What is your maintenance routine for your aquarium?

I perform a ten-gallon water change monthly using Instant Ocean salt and make RO water every 10 days. Weekly, I clean the skimmer cup and add supplements, while the skimmer is fully cleaned once a month. The Nielsen reactor is refilled bi-weekly.

What do you feed your fish and corals?

I feed a variety of foods daily, including brine and mysid shrimp, prawn, silversides, squid, and frozen plankton enhanced with a food supplement. I also provide dry foods like flakes to ensure a diverse diet.
