Frequently Asked Questions

What type of lighting do you use for your reef tank?

I use T5 lighting with eight 54-watt bulbs, consisting of five ATI Aquablue Special (11,000K) and three ATI Blue Plus bulbs. This combination provides maximum intensity and a balanced spectrum suitable for coral growth and color.

How far should SPS corals be from the light source?

For optimal growth and coloration, SPS should be kept no more than 18 inches from the light source. For intensely colored SPS corals, I keep them less than 10 inches away from the lights.

What is the photoperiod for your main tank?

The main tank is on an 11-hour photoperiod from 12:30 PM to 11:30 PM, while the sump-refugium and propagation tank are on a 10-hour partial reverse photoperiod.

What type of filtration system do you use?

I have a 40-gallon sump with a 1/3 HP Daeil chiller and a Barr Aquatics SK1600 skimmer, which is rated for tanks up to 500 gallons. I also use Rowaphos and Seachem Matrix Carbon in filter bags for chemical filtration.

How often do you perform water changes and what is your method?

I perform a 5-10% water change weekly using Tropic Marin salt mixed with distilled water. Additionally, I siphon out detritus build-up once a month.

What are your water parameters?

My key water parameters are: Calcium ~ 400 ppm, Alkalinity 7-8 dKH, Specific Gravity ~ 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.3, and undetectable levels of Nitrate, Nitrite, and Phosphate.

How did you design your reefscape?

The reefscape is designed to simulate a densely packed SPS garden, using large staghorn type live rock to create pillars and spacious caverns. This structure allows for hiding spots for fish and maximizes swimming space.

What type of substrate do you use?

I use about 120 lbs. of fine grade sand to form a semi-deep sand bed that starts at 4 inches at the back and slopes down to about 2-3 inches in front.

What supplementation do you provide for calcium and alkalinity?

I use a DIY modular system that includes a dual chamber calcium reactor filled with CaribSea ARM media to maintain calcium levels in line with the demands of my corals.

What do you feed your fish and corals?

I feed my fish Formula 1 & 2 pellets every two to three days, along with a weekly stew of Liquid Life Bioplankton, finely chopped nori, Cyclop-Eeze, and Formula 1 flake. For corals, I occasionally dose iodine and amino acids.

How frequently do you test your water parameters?

I conduct bi-weekly water tests for calcium and dKH using Salifert test kits, while other parameters like nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate are tested on rare occasions.

How do you maintain cleanliness in your tank?

I clean the skimmer collection cup bi-weekly, the tank viewing panels every three days with algae-cleaning magnets, and I trim macroalgae in the refugium once a month.
